13/04/12 ‘Exciting times for Young People’s Voice’ by Sam Thomas (LGBT Youth Engagement Worker)
In January we held our first Young People’s Voice Campaigns Action Group meeting. With new funding from Tudor Trust this exciting new project aims to raise awareness and campaign for LGBT young people’s issues, led by LGBT young people who are passionate about their rights.
Only just a few meetings we have made substantial progress in getting this project off the ground and this blog is a roundup of our progress to date…
The story so far…
To date we have run two short campaigns using social and digital media including ‘The Big Push’ for World Mental Health Day highlighting the issues LGBT young people still face in regards to mental ill health and as ‘End LGBT Bullying’ to raise awareness of the impact of LGBT bullying during Anti-Bullying Week.
To maximise our campaigning efforts, we are linking in with national and international campaigns like Stonewall’s It Gets Better Today and short campaigns around awareness events such as LGBT History Month and International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
As part of this new project we will run an annual campaign. This year our campaign is ‘LGBT Youth Positive Images’ to challenge the stereotypes associated with LGBT young people and promote safer spaces in educational and community settings.
YPC Campaigns Co-ordnators are in the early stages of planning and organising ‘LGBT Children, Young People and Families Day’ to be held in February next year.
The exciting event will celebrate LGBT youth identity and community with the theme being ‘Togetherness.’ We plan to organise a ‘Gathering’ for community members with presentations, performances, activities throughout the day and evening. Details about the event will be revealed later in the year.
If you are LGBT, aged 16-25 and living in Brighton, Hove or wider Sussex, it’s not too late to get involved. We are still recruiting Campaigns Co-ordnators that will lead on the event.
Anyone interested in joining YPV is welcome to come along to our next Campaigns Action Group meeting taking place on April 18th (6-8pm) at the Friends Meeting House. New volunteers are encouraged to come along a little earlier at 5.30pm for an induction.
